Niagara Falls Observation Tower Overview

The Niagara Falls Observation Tower, also known as the Prospect Point Observation Tower, is an iconic structure on the U.S. side of Niagara Falls. It offers visitors breathtaking panoramic views of the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Horseshoe Falls, plus the Niagara River. The viewing deck extends out over the Niagara Gorge, providing an excellent vantage point to appreciate the grandeur of the falls and the surrounding landscape. High-speed elevators provide access to the Gorge for the Crow’s Nest viewing area and the boarding area for the Maid of the Mist.

The elevator and viewing deck are open to all visitors. Boat ticket purchase is not required.

Observation Tower Details

Standing 282 feet (86 meters) tall, the Prospect Point Observation Tower rises above the edge of the Niagara Gorge, offering visitors an incredible vantage point to take in sweeping views of ALL THREE Falls and the turbulent rapids below.

After viewing the falls from above, go down to the base of the tower for a truly immersive adventure. Experience the different perspectives offered by the Crow’s Nest hike and Maid of the Mist boat tour, where you can feel the mist and hear the thunderous roar of the falls. This combination makes for an unforgettable day exploring the natural wonders of Niagara Falls.

Boarding The Maid of The Mist

The Maid of the Mist boat tours also depart from the base of the Observation Tower, making it a convenient starting point for this iconic Niagara Falls experience. After taking the elevator down from the observation deck, visitors can follow the signs to the Maid of the Mist boarding area. Here, you’ll receive a complimentary rain poncho to protect against the spray from the falls. The boarding process is smooth and well-organized, with staff available to assist and answer any questions. Once on board, the boat departs from the dock and begins its journey past the American Falls, heading towards the powerful Horseshoe Falls.

History of the Niagara Falls Observation Tower

The current Niagara Falls Observation Tower was constructed in 1961 and is made of aluminum, glass, and steel. It replaced an earlier wooden structure that had been in place since the late 19th century. The tower has undergone several renovations and improvements over the years to enhance the visitor experience and ensure safety. In 2001, a significant renovation project included the installation of new elevators, updated railings, and improved accessibility features.
